Program Overview

Teaching exceptional learners is one of the most demanding careers and one of the most rewarding. You work with the kids others might overlook. You see their potential, when many see only roadblocks. For you, the world is in the little steps--a new word, a drawing, and a happy interaction with another student. Often working with the children is the easy part of teaching exceptional education. There are strict demands made on you by the school administration, the community, and the parents.

If you have weighed the pros and cons, and have decided you have the professional and spiritual calling for teaching special education, IWU's Exceptional Learners Online Program (ELMO) prepares you for your career in just 16 months at the affordable cost of .

A Values-Based Program

Teaching exceptional learners requires an exceptional character and ethical fortitude. IWU incorporates the development of your personal set of moral principles into its online education curriculum.
Designed specifically for teaching exceptional learners, this online only program accepts teachers who hold a valid, but not necessarily current, teaching license. It prepares them for licensure in Indiana in Exceptional Needs Mild Intervention. Your license qualifies you to work with children in the category of mild mental disabilities, emotional disorders, and learning disabilities. If you plan to use this certificate in another state you will need to check if the state licensing agency accepts it. For more information about transferring an Indiana exceptional learners licensure to your state, please see the IWU Exceptional Learners Online Program Admission Requirements page before applying.

Teaching exceptional learners in the Classroom During the Program

Key to your success is the hands-on use of your skills as you learn them. Six out of eight courses require you to arrange and participate in field applications. You need a classroom teacher licensed in Mild Intervention or Severe or Profound Intervention to mentor your work.
